Job Summary

  • This position is eligible for telework for applicants who reside in Minnesota or in a bordering state, with supervisory approval and satisfactory performance. If you live in a state bordering Minnesota, you must live within 50 miles or less from the primary work location to be eligible for telework.

This position exists to support the Department of Human Services’ (DHS) compliance with state and federal laws by providing advanced legal and case management support to the Appeals Division throughout the administrative hearing process.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as point of contact between the Appeals Division and parties involved in administrative hearings to obtain information, provide guidance, and ensure compliance with legal requirements using established appeals procedures, communication tools, and data-privacy processes.
  • Coordinate scheduling and continuance activities for administrative hearings to ensure timely and efficient adjudication of appeals using scheduling systems, communication tools, and procedural rules.
  • Draft legal documents and correspondence to support accurate, timely, and legally compliant adjudication of appeals using legal research tools, statutes, regulations, and Division templates.
  • Prepare cases for administrative hearings and provide case management support to ensure accurate records, efficient hearings, and proper case progression using appeals databases, document-management systems, and hearing procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of formal paralegal or legal assistant coursework from an accredited program which resulted in a program certificate, associate degree, bachelor’s degree or post bachelor’s degree; OR

One (1) years’ experience as a paralegal, legal secretary or legal assistant in a legal setting; OR

Two (2) years’ experience working with administrative hearings and administrative hearing law procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of legal requirements for fair hearings, administrative law procedures and the administrative fair hearing process.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.
  • Knowledge/Experience with MAXIS, MMIS or Minnesota Eligibility Technology System (METS).
  • Variety of experiences working effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures.
