The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest house staff union in the United States. We are a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing nearly 41,000 resident physicians who are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. The Committee of Interns and Residents is looking to fill a Lead Community Relations and Engagement Coordinator position to engage residents in our Western chapters in public health issues that affect the communities they serve. To accomplish this, we need a highly driven and committed individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills. The Coordinator is responsible for successfully engaging members and potential members on health and income disparities, and developing strategic relationships within CIR hospitals, the community and with elected officials. The Lead Community Relations and Engagement Coordinator will report to the West Coast Government and Community Relations Director.

What You’ll Do

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, health advocacy and policy advocates coalitions, and stakeholders that align with CIR’s core values to foster collaboration and mutual support.
  • Design and implement partnership projects with employers and community organizations that engage residents on community health.
  • Develop strong member leaders who are eager to engage their community on health issues.
  • Identify strategies to resolve member issues in work life, medical training, and governance structures within hospital operations.
  • Plan and execute CIR region-specific community programming.
  • Coordinate with the field teams to identify member interest in social justice/worker justice/health equity issues, and create opportunities for members to engage in community events and actions.
  • Attend coalition meetings and identify opportunities to collaborate to advance CIR’s political, legislative, and bargaining priorities.
  • Track, analyze, and report on community engagement efforts, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Provide support to staff for the recruitment, training, leadership development, and coordination of member community activists for community events and actions.
  • Provide support on issue campaigns, contract bargaining, and other community activities.
  • Collaborate with the West Coast Government and Community Relations Director, field staff, and organizing staff to integrate community strategy into planning for contract and organizing campaigns.
  • Empower our members to build effective advocacy relationships with community partners and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in the mobilization of coalition groups and community partners in support of member actions, events, and issues.
  • For work related to national advocacy allies or federal public health issues, collaborate with the East Coast Community Relations and Engagement Coordinator.
  • Identify local public health issues and policy, and work to address how those impact members and patients.

What Makes a Great Candidate

  • Must have three or more years of labor organizing, state or local agency or association, non-profit community organization, or progressive elected official experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Healthcare experience preferred, but not required.
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written) and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues for members and community allies.
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze information, and deal with conflicting/changing priorities.
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgment.
  • Possesses an understanding of relevant healthcare/economic/political issues.
  • Possesses an understanding of income and health disparities concepts.
  • Energetic self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments.
  • A team player who has a positive attitude and excels at collaboration and working cross-functionally.
  • Strong ability to connect and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds, including union members, union staff and leaders, elected officials, other community and issue stakeholders.
  • Willing to work outside normal business hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness and ability to be in the field for work assignments and travel as needed within CIR’s West Coast chapters, including those in California, Washington, New Mexico, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota and any other locations CIR may expand to in the Western half of the United States.
  • Must reside in the Los Angeles area.
  • Working knowledge of membership databases.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel); Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (Docs & Sheets).
  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides.

CIR Offers

Competitive salary ($111,634 – $134,923) commensurate with experience and in compliance with the staff collective bargaining agreement. Excellent benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage with no employee contributions; generous paid leave time including four weeks’ vacation within the first calendar year of employment, paid holidays, personal days, and sick days; short and long-term disability insurance; 401(k); defined benefit pension plan; and mileage reimbursement.
