Business Data Steward
Metadata & Data Catalog
- Own the collection, quality, and ongoing curation of metadata for data assets within your domain including business definitions, classifications, ownership assignments, and sensitivity tagging
- Maintain and improve the quality of business term assignments in the data catalog, ensuring assets are accurately described and easy to find
- Lead the identification and definition of Critical Data Elements (CDEs) for your domain, in collaboration with data owners and the CoE
- Review and rationalize existing metadata coverage, balancing completeness with clarity to improve discoverability for data consumers
- Ensure all new data assets and data products (procured or internally developed) entering the domain are governed at the point of onboarding metadata complete before assets go live
Data Products & Marketplace
- Collaborate with data engineers and analysts to define, publish, and maintain data products in the Data Marketplace
- Drive adoption of the Marketplace within your domain by working with consumers (analysts, data scientists, data users) to ensure assets are findable, trusted, and accessible
- Certify and maintain data products in alignment with governance standards set by the CoE, ensuring they meet quality and documentation requirements
Data Quality
- Define and agree data quality thresholds for CDEs together with business data owners and technical teams
- Monitor data quality for critical data elements using available tooling, triage flagged issues, and coordinate resolution with the appropriate data owners
- Shift the domain's approach to data quality from reactive to proactive, in alignment with CoE building repeatable processes for ongoing measurement and improvement
Data Lineage & Ownership
- Support the documentation and publication of end-to-end data lineage for critical data assets and products, working with technical teams where automation is limited
- Maintain a clear and up-to-date map of data ownership within the domain - ensuring every significant asset has an accountable owner
- Escalate ownership gaps or lineage issues to the domain owner and CoE as needed
Domain Working Group & Governance Activities
- Organize and facilitate domain data governance working group sessions; setting agendas, tracking actions, and keeping stakeholders engaged and accountable
- Coordinate governance activities across the domain, balancing ongoing maintenance work with new initiatives aligned to annual governance goals
- Support the CoE in conducting maturity assessments (DCAM-aligned), providing domain-level evidence, artifacts, and input
- Act as the primary point of contact between your domain and the central Data Governance CoE translating CoE standards into domain-level practice
- Informally guide and support other data owners and contributors within the domain on governance expectations and tooling
Experience
- 5+ years of experience working with data in a business domain context; understanding how data is created, used
- Hands-on experience with data governance, data management, or data quality activities - in a formal stewardship role or as part of a broader analytical or operational role
- Experience coordinating or facilitating cross-functional working groups or projects, with the ability to drive progress without direct authority
- Familiarity with data catalog, metadata management, or data quality tooling (experience with Informatica Cloud is a plus)
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of data concepts: metadata, data lineage, data quality dimensions, master data, and data products and how they connect to business outcomes
- Ability to translate between business language and data/technical language - comfortable working with both domain stakeholders and data engineers
- Analytical mindset with attention to detail, able to assess metadata quality, identify gaps, and drive structured improvements
- Clear and confident communicator, able to engage stakeholders at different levels and build buy-in for governance practices
- Self-directed and organized, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and prioritize effectively in a complex organization
Education
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a field relevant to the domain - for example, life sciences, pharmacy, business, economics, supply chain, or information management depending on domain context
